Our project deals with the methodological support of art education. It is based in the web platform www.nedatovano.cz (with accompanying Facebook and Pinterest pages), where you can find animated videoclips and worksheets with ideas for art education. This project has gained special significance during quarantine (in the Czech Republic the period started in March 2020, when all schools had to be closed), when it developed greatly and became an important volunteer-based activity that provided support not only to teachers, but also to children and their parents. In our workshop, participants can try one of the ways to implement distance art education. We will offer participants five animated videoclips and a set of worksheets inviting them to dive into a creative activity and to share their works. The materials will be available to download and to be used freely.

Dear friends,

What do you think? Is it possible to teach art education at a distance?

We were looking for an answer to this difficult question especially at a time when schools had to be closed in the Czech Republic (i.e. from March 2020) – and again now, at the beginning of the new school year, when a new wave of the pandemic is beginning.

You may have experienced something similar: everyone was taken aback, there was a shortage of digital teaching materials, teachers improvised and learned to work with e-learning tools to the best of their ability. In many schools, they focused mainly on the so-called main subjects such as mathematics, Czech language, foreign languages.

And art education? Unfortunately, it was often overlooked. We didn't like that. It is our believe that especially in a tense situations, fine art and creative and reflective artistic activities are particularly important. We were convinced that children need not only homework, but also space for creation, reflection, emotions.

 

But how to teach art subjects remotely when we are not prepared for it and good digital educational resources are minimal? In this workshop, we would like to tell you about the path we have taken successfully. It is a small taste of the digital resources we create. We will be happy if you try working with our methodological materials and evaluate for yourself whether this path is stimulating. Judging by the high number of visitors to our FB site and the responses received from children, parents, teachers and the media – we can say, it has proved its worth. It is certainly not the only way, but it connects modern means of communication with what we love in our field – creation, working with artistic means, art, reflexivity.

Enjoy our animated clips about art!

So far, five educational animated videoclips for art education have been created in our project. The content is humorously conveyed to children by animated characters of an art theorist, a collector, a restorer and an artist who talk about art with children and adults.

Are you a teacher and want to create your own activities according to our experience? Hooray! Let’s do it!


We try to adhere to the following didactic principles:

1. Each of our worksheets always contains a work of art that represents an inspiration and a creative stimulus for children.


2. It also contains a follow-up creative activity that develops some of the aspects of the work, e.g. the means of expression used, the theme, the procedure.


3. We make sure that the tasks are evolving but also simple. Children should not imitate the external form of the particular work of art but should understand it through their activity. And through art to understand themselves and the world around.


4. Our ideas lead children to think and connect the creative, emotional and cognitive side. That's why we ask children questions.


5. We do not forget about the social aspect of learning either. We know that it is best to learn together and enrich yourself in a dialogue with others. That's why we encourage children to talk about everything with friends or parents.


6. Our themes contain a motivating, humanising element in the form of illustrated characters. Individual characters representing the art field (an art theorist, a collector, a restorer, an artist) talk to children and try to mediate the universe of art to them.

The author of the original artistic style and charming animations is Pavla Baštanová,a young artist and Ph.D. student of the Department of Art Education, Faculty of Education, Palacký University Olomouc, CZ. In addition to experts-didacts from the Faculty of Education and the Olomouc Museum of Art, also Czech Radio Olomouc participates in the creation of our educational videos, in which they take care of the sound tracks. During the pandemic, other authors and galleries volunteered for the project. Many thanks goes to all of them!

The Untitled. Undated. project offers a helping hand to all those who are somewhat unsure of themselves in the world of art. The name of the project refers to typical descriptions of works of art, and the project is a helping hand to those who feel discouraged by a similar description or a seemingly inaccessible work in a gallery.

Videoclips and worksheets are an original didactic tool, the aim of which is to convey to children aged 10–14 some concepts and facts from the world of art (professions of the art field, genres, the relationship of art to reality, etc.). The content is humorously conveyed to children by animated characters of an art theorist, a collector, a restorer and an artist who talk about art with children and adults. During the pandemic, our project grew into separate series: first Tvoříme doma [Artmaking at Home], then Tvoříme o svátcích [Artmaking on Holidays], Tvoříme v noci [Artmaking at Night], Tvoříme digitálně [Artmaking Digitally], and Ve světě obrazů [In the world of images]. The latest addition is the series titled Tvoříme tiše [Artmaking Quietly], which is intended for deaf children.

 

Videoclips and worksheets are available to download for children and teachers and are pro-inclusive – specifically, they seek to enrich the available teaching materials for children with hearing impairments. Deaf children whose mother tongue is Czech sign language are often neglected on the basis of fine arts being mainly visual. However, it is not possible to understand art in depth – especially modern art – without a supporting interpretation and explanation of the context. The authors respond to this fact and present modern educational material accessible both to ordinary children and also to children with hearing impairments thanks to subtitles and interpretation in sign language.
